did you like it? I read it and I still don't know who Alice is. Does any one know and also do you think it is a real diary?

Yes, I read it. I saw the last answer about who Alice is. I thought the narrator called another girl Alice when she was in California, a girl on the street. Even if she did, it was only mentioned once.

Do I think it was real? Probably, though maybe not 100%. Some of the language isn't what you'd expect from a girl on drugs, but she does remark on how she feels and what she experiences on them at times, and I could see her being more grandiose when under the influence.

I liked the book quite a bit and know of high schoolers here being required to read it. I wish there was an updated version (isn't that pitiful) because it is very dated in language, and I think that turns a lot of teens off, so the message might be lost.

I did read the one about the girl that gets AIDS. It was heartwrenching, too.

I read it a long time ago. I don't think it is known if it was an actual diary. Supposedly it was a diary of a 15 year old girl that was found by her parents after she overdosed. "Alice" is just a made-up name, if it was a real diary- the girl's name is not known nor is it ever mentioned in the book. Some think it was a propoganda sham for an anti-drug era (60s and 70s), some think it is true. I must admit- the style seems pretty advanced for a 15 year old.

Some research:
**The "Alice" of the book's title refers to the druggie girl of that name in the 1967 Jefferson Airplane hit White Rabbit, a song that expounds upon a drug theme its lyricist found in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Go Ask Alice was the product of Beatrice Sparks, an author who has come out with a number of "teens who saw their lives ruined by their bad choices" offerings, each one presented as a true story, often in the form of a diary of an anonymous teen:
It Happened to Nancy (she's dying of AIDS)

Annie's Baby: The Diary of Anonymous, a Pregnant Teenager

Treacherous Love: The Diary of an Anonymous Teenager (teen girl is sexually taken advantage of by a teacher)

Jay's Journal (yet another diary, this one of a teen boy who turns to satan worship and drug use)

Almost Lost: The True Story of an Anonymous Teenager's Life on the Streets

Kim: Empty Inside: The Diary of an Anonymous Teenager (eating disorders)

Alice is a name taken from a song about Alice in Wonderland. It is not a real diary. It is a work of fiction that might be based on a real person, but is certainly not her personal thoughts.
The reason for the author doing this is to make the book seem real and, thus, increase the emotional impact it has on the reader.

I've read it. I think Alice is just based on a real person, not a real diary. If I remember correctly. But wait.....maybe it is real? Do some research. Wow I was no help!

it is a real diary, and no one knows who she is, the names where changed to protect her and her families identity. Yes i do think that its a good book, teaches teens not to get involved with drugs, i know i don't want all that crap happening to me!
