What can I do for my baby to help him with a bowel movement, I can tell he is in pain. Is there anything safe to give a baby for constipation at this age?

THANK YOU to all who have answered or are about to answer. I guess as i was writing this question, my lil guy decided to do it on his own !! He's not constipated anymore lol. Who ever thought that seeing and smelling poop can be such a joyous occasion.

My pediatrician had me give my daughter 1 ounce prune juice mixed with 1 ounce water at 3 weeks. It worked some of the time, but when it didn't I would put vaseline on the tip of a rectal thermometer. You just insert the very tip (the silver part). A baby's natural instinct is to try to push it out, so she would go almost immediately. My only caution is to be prepared with wipes!!! Do not use Karo syrup! It can contain a bacteria that causes botulism. The risk is very small, but not worth it. If nothing else works you can use an infant suppository, but don't use them very often because a baby can become dependent on them.

They say it's normal for babies to go quite a few days (even a week or so) with out a bowel movement but....
1)Get in a warm bath with him and massage his belly in circles, clockwise.2) Use some lube on the thermometer to stimulate the anus and it does help, but don't insert it too far (1/2 in maybe). 3)Lay him on his back and move his legs like he is riding a bicycle. If you have a jumper for him, let him jump around and get things moving. If he goes too long, you can use a glycerin suppository (but check with your doctor first) Massage the belly often (not right after meals) always clockwise. The warm bath with massage usually does the trick and can make for a messy bath if you know what I mean

Always check with your Dr. so you know how long is too long with no bowel movements. Chart what you are doing so your dr. knows what you've tried and when.

I see many people said prunes and juices, but your baby isn't ready for solids or juice till 6mo. Try the massage and leg movements first

I hope he hasnt been constipated for too long which could become impacted and too hard....you should call your pediatrician, call the pharmacist at a drugstore they are surprisingly helpul at times. try to give some water to your baby for hydration which is a major cause of constipation in infants and massage the tummy in a firm but light circular motion(age appropriate pressure mind you)....they have Mylecon for infants which are gas drops at the drugstore so they might have something for constipation too...call ther pharmacy and pediatrician. Dont give your baby anything without consulting a professional listed above.

My son also had trouble with constipation-the first thing I would try is to feed him the baby food prunes & if that doesn't work I was told to try a tsp. of dark Karo syrup in their next bottle, but the best thing would be to talk to your doctor.

In the future, when he gets constipated, give him apple juice watered down 50% juice 50% water.

I am raising a granddaughter who has always had that problem and it was the NICU that told me to do that. It has always worked for her.

You could try massaging his stomach gently, for a good 5 min. Sometimes you can feel how hard it is and you can kinda work it out. Maybe a little apple juice in a bottle if he'll take it.

I know the joy & relief you feel for them when they have pooed. LOL!
What I usually do is puree a banana and a kiwi in the blender and give to him in the a.m. feeding & that usually does it. Kiwi helps alot even for adults.

they are a reward from him.

my son is 7 weeks and the dr told me to put Karo syrup in his bottle. It helps a lot! But only put 1 teaspoon. Oh yeah, the light not the dark and get it with the real vanilla, they love the taste!

stage 1 prunes (gerber) would be okay, also a warm bath always helps. Give a warm bath and gently massage the tummy.
