I love books (and movies for that matter) that have well develped characters. I like it when I almost feel like I really know the characters personally and can sympathize with their struggles, joys, etc. Real people, not phony ones, are what I like. Some authors that I like including Penelope Stokes, Richard Paul Evans, Irene Hunt, Rosamunde Pilcher, Tolkien, Steinbeck, and Nancy Moser all descibe their characters well.
I also like books that have some humor, but are not all humor. I like it when a character has a real problem but are able to overcome it and become a more compassionate person.

Fact books and history books I enjoy the most, for some reason I always felt that a made up story was sort of a waste of time and had no practical use.(Im not trying to offend anyone)

I love a good story line with strong characters that stand out in your mind as "real people". I love books that make you think. I like books that invite you along on the "journey" and bring you right into the story. Books are best when they don't underestimate the reader's intelligence or imagination.
If you're referring to genre, then I like poetry, historical fiction, fantasy, and realistic fiction.
(Oh, yeah, and the use of humor is always a plus, even in a serious story.)

I used to work for publishers as a book liaison to read manuscripts and wrote reviews for foreign publishers.
One of the most important thing as many people who work on publishers or reader is that if you are not interested in the first paragraphs, it may be boring.

I enjoy being told a story that is a metaphor for life that says, "life is like this!" whether it's serious drama, science fiction, or fantasy.
And I like stories to hold the suspense until the last page and also have dimensional characters.

I like science fiction, fantasy, classics. Basically, as long as the writing is good and you can keep it relatively clean (I don't have a lot of respect for writers who rely on X-rated scenes, it practically screams "NO TALENT!"). Read Isaac Asimov, he has a talent for telling a tale without a ton of violence.

What do you want to write about? Lots of people like to read lots of different things, you need to choose something you're comfortable in.
