To become a full fledged psychiatrist you have to complete medical school --- Usually 8 years. A psychiatrist will have to have a M.D. degree with a specialization in psychiatry and will be licensed to prescribe medications and drugs.

As with any job envoling therapy, you need to be mentally prepared to deal with all sorts of situations, ranging from rape victims, to convicted rapists, to those suffering with depression, etc. It's a difficult job to take on, and you need to learn how to leave your work at the work place.

But after all eight years of rigorous college education, should you provide the dedication to get there, you'll be well prepared!
