If you son is anything like mine was at that age, he loved astronauts. What about selecting John Glenn, Neil Armstrong, etc. You could also select a leader like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy, George Patton, Dwight Eisenhower, the Wright Brothers, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Thurgood Marshall, Colin Powell, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Douglas MacArthur, Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens, Charles Lindbergh, etc. More recent heroes would be any of the firemen or policemen who risked their lives during the 911 tragedy. Of course, there are also lots of female heroes, but since your child is a boy, he would probably prefer writing about a man.
Also, check out the website listed below. It lists American heroes in various categories, like athletic, military, musical, etc.

Seeing that it is black history month, maybe someone like Martin Luther King, Jr. would be appropriate.
