I normally enjoy painting and scrapbooking, but lately I'm SO critical. I've become so precise and calculating with measurements and wanting things perfect...I've sucked the fun right out of it all!!! WHY, and how do I fix this problem? I haven't even had my paints out for months because I'm so sure I'll just "screw up". What happened to me?

The reason you have developed into a perfectionist is because the left side of your brain is trying to take over.
You don't want to correct this. Rather compensate for it.
Dedicate your perfectionism to more calculated pieces of art such as a Chuck Close or something that will require a lot of precision.
One of 2 things will happen:
--You will find a art style that really appeals to you.
--You will fullfill your perfectionistic faze and revert back to your
former artsy care free style.

Both are winners.

I love things that are handcrafted, handmade and hand painted just for the imperfections. Simply because I have enough stuff that is machine made and quite common place. As in nature there are no two flowers exactly alike. Why should anyones hand and eye be any different?

Maybe you're a type A personality who wants everything to be in order. Art doesn't have to be orderly. Just have fun with it and relax in it. If you waste a little paint 'oh well' just buy more. Something's been waiting for you to create it. . .

Just remember that it is just a hobby. Take a break from it for a while. Not a long time but a day or two

You became a perfectionist. Your art doesn't need to be perfect, thats what makes it unique. Look, if you mess up, dont touch it, and just continue on with it. I'm sure when your done, that it would look perfect.

Hey I'm 46 years old and I still can't figure out myself.

I'm trying to let go, but I'm still hiding behind beer.

You need to accept yourself, and go do it.

Check out this page at my site, with comments from many people who fight the same devil:

I find reading it helps me when I get into that mode too.

Good luck!
