I keep hearing announcers state a basketball team's RPI. What does RPI stand for, how is it determined and who determines it?

RPI basically means a team's strength of schedule.

RPI is determined by the relative record of the team in question, and the records of the teams of which they play.

I believe the exact acronym translation is: Relative Power Index

The RPI is based on 3 components. The teams winning percentage. Their opponents winning percentage, and their opponents opponents winning percentage. These percentages are compiled, and by adding up RPI points you get an RPI rating. These percentages will of course change game to game.

Ratings Percentage Index
It's based on the team's winning percentage, their opponents' winning percentage(strength of schedule), and opponents' opponents' winning percentage. That basically means, for example, North Carolina crushed Dayton early in the year, Dayton in the Atlantic 10 played Xavier. So Xavier would benefit from a North Carolina win. 1/4 is winning percent. 1/4 opponents' opponents' winning percent. 1/2 opponents' winning percent
