My personal suggestion is to get an Apple. Modern Apples can run Windows AND Mac OS, so you can use whichever one you need to get things done. For average tasks, such as internet browsing, email, music, photos, videos, word processing, etc., an Apple will do everything you want it to do in a very easy, simple, and smart fashion. A Sony running Windows will probably come with Vista, which doesn't really include everything you need to do what you could with an Apple.

Apples come with iLife, which is a great suite of programs for video editing, photo organization and printing, music listening, and even making your own music!

Vista comes with its own suite of programs, but on most levels they aren't as good as the Apple software.

Also, Apples have consistently been shown to be much more reliable than Sonys. Sony has had a pretty poor track record these last few years, especially in the Support department, while Apple has remained stellar in all areas for quite a while.

If nothing else, Apples certainly look better and have some very smart design, like a built in camera (iSight) and Magsafe, which protects your laptop being jerked around if somebody trips over the power cable.

If you are into gaming, a Sony might be a little more geared toward your wishes. But still, Apples can run Windows, and thus are perfectly capable of gaming. So don't let anyone tell you that Apples are no good for games.

As for pricing, Apples and Sonys are pretty close. Apple tends to be a little expensive, but I really think that it pays off in the long run in terms of reliability, less frustration, good support if anything goes wrong, and just generally a better experience.

And if you're used to PCs and afraid that an Apple might be tough to get used to, don't worry about it! Apples are very simple to learn, it won't take much time to get used to it at all.

Oh yeah, and Apples are much more immune to viruses than PCs, as well as being more secure against hackers and security threats like Spyware, which plagues PCs.

Best wishes,
Snowbourne

That depends on what you need to use it for. Apples are amazing for editing videos, creating and listening to music, editing photos, and creating websites (though you need to buy a .mac account for your own website). Don't be pressed to think that you will be excluded on an Apple. They browse the internet and have chatting capabilities too. If you have an ipod you will experience error free bliss while using it with an apple. I have microsoft office on mine and can communicate with other Windows using machines on my network. Sony laptops are worth it if you are accustomed to Windows or rely on programs for home/work that are only written for windows. As far as Sony versus, IBM or Dell laptops, www.cnet.com has some good unbiased free reviews along with pros and cons to help you make your best choice.

You should get a mac, hands down. Why? Because no matter what you like/need to do, it can be handled with ease like you've never seen. You can indulge your artistic side and your working side with speed and simplicity. Most people are skeptical because they are used to pc's and that's all they've ever known. Trust me, I was the same way. But when you see how much faster, stable, and powerful they are, you will not be disappointed.
Oh, and if you absolutely NEED windows, mac can run the windows operating system side by side with osX (10). Of course, if you choose to run windows, you will again be open to all types of viruses. Check it out for yourself.

Buying a new Intel powered Mac is the best computer deal out there. With the Intel Mac you can have both a Windows and a Mac system. This new Mac accommodates both OS X and Windows........you get two computers for the price of one; and that's always a good deal.
