where do gypsies come from?

Ok, I was not going to bother with this one. I have answered it more times than I can count.

The member who answered "India" was correct.

We did not originate in Romania or Hungary. The reason many people mistake us for this is the name Rroma, Rromani, or however it is being spelled. "Rom" or "Rrom" means "man" in Romanes. It has no bearing on Romania or Rome.

I think traditionally gypsies came from Hungary and Romania, I don't know how the term was started since many cultures have a version of gypsies, meaning groups of people that travel from place to place often getting jobs as pickers and harvesters of whatever crops happen to be within that region...Think about it, circuses, migrant farm workers, construction crews...all could be thought of as gypsies
