I'm thinking that it might not really have a story, but if there's historically some injury he recieved there or something, that'd be good to know too.

Most likely it isn't significant or from a historical injury as anthing relevant would have been revield. It's a character design, just like scars, eye patches, sun glasses. It's a way to make a character look unique and different. There are so many characters out ther ein the manga world that artists like to put things like bandages, patches and such to make the character stand out a little more.
