It was on Planet Earth. Some African lions will take on African elephants, usually young or weaker ones. The pride in the film was large and was skillful in taking elephants. Normally, however, lions will leave elephants alone unless they come across a dead one or manage to get a young one away from its mother.

A Bengal tiger can kill a full grown male Asian elephant with tusks, one on one. The tiger must dodge being gored, trampled, and head butted for about 8 grueling hours before taking it down. It is so much hard work it is never done if there is easier prey around. It is a last ditch effort to obtain food. In some cases the tiger will lose it's life in the fight. African elephants are only 20% heavier and two feet taller, on average. Lions are only perhaps 10% lighter and one foot shorter than tigers on average. An entire pride of lions? That does not surprise me.

Lions will try to isolate a young Elephant so that they can kill it
but this rarely happens
Elphants are very social animals ,and all Adults considder it their job to protect a young one
and to watch over them even if it is not their own
if one is in trouble all will try to help
and they have a very disaplined guard system .
always some appointed Adults will hold
sometimes if spoked or they have got on a run and a small one is isolated
some lions may get lucky .
but an Adult elephant is no match for a Lion the elephant will thow him up in the air catch him on the trunk break his back and then stamp on him
end of the lion.

Nothing is impossible. Lions have been known to attack an elephant, especially if they're hungry enough, however, in general they don't attempt it, because one good stamp with a foot, and the lion is dead. Elephants are very heavy, large, and for a lion to successfully kill one, they have to knock it down, and cut off it's air supply. In other words, chomp down on it's throat. That's pretty difficult. Baby elephants are easy, that's what the big worry is.

There was a doco on tv just a few nights ago. Not sure what it was called, but it could've been Planet Earth. It was a time of hardship for all the animals and out of necessity the lions brought down an elephant while they were drinking at the water hole.
