What size are you using? If there is a smaller size try that first, plus you need to ensure that you are putting it in all the way. I've noticed that if I'm in a hurry and do not insert it all the way, it tends to hurt.

It doesn't make a difference if you are a virgin, I wore them for 6 years before I lost my virginity.

Hope it works out, if not you may have to switch to pads.

PS. Tampon don't cause cancer so don't worry about that.

It could be that you are small, which is perfectly normal too. Not every one if physicaly able to use a tampon.

OR You are not putting them in correctly. I use O.B. without the the applicator so I can control it better. They have a type called Silk Ease which is much more comfortable to insert. Read the instructions that come in the box. When you insert it, take a deep breath and relax. I usually put a foot up on the side of the bathtub to brace myself and get better access. Point the tampon toward your back. Your vagina is not straight up and and down. It is slightly tilted, so follow the tilt. There's a diagram in the instructions. When you have the tampon in correctly, you should not feel it. If you do feel it, it may not be in far enough. If don't feel it but your lower back aches, you may have it in wrong. Take it out and start over with a new one. You should change your tampon every 4 hours or so, or every time you go to the bathroom.

also, it doesn't matter if you are a virgin or not. I have never had intercourse with a man and I have been using tampons since the 7th grade.

Here is a good site with some hints.

Well, I was educated that a tampon should never hurt if it is being inserted correctly and you are using the correct size. If you have pushed it up far enough you shouldn't be able to feel it inside you at all.
But that being said, I didn't use one until after I lost my virginity. Perhaps you are trying to use a large sized one when a smaller one would be better suited? Or have you tried applicator tampons which make it so much easier to insert it?
Also, perhaps it is the fact that you are a virgin that makes you uncomfortable about putting anything up there at all, which in turn would make you tense up would cause it to hurt you as you tried to put it in. As hard as it is, you need to relax all the muscles down there before you attempt anything. Try deep breaths, or distracting yourself in some way.

Your tampon hurting has nothing to do with being a virgin. Virgins can use tampons without problems. I started using tampons as a virgin.

The reason it hurts is you don't have it in far enough. If it is inserted right, you don't feel it.

More like you are tense (your vagina has muscles, if they are tense when you insert or take out a tampon, it will be uncomfortable). Or, you are using a tampon that is too big for you. There are tampons for teens, try those. If it still hurts, stop using them. It has nothing to do with the fact you are a virgin.

If it's in right, it doesn't hurt. I heard that from my mother for years, that I must be doing it wrong. Then I found out from a gynecologist, who got a very short look because I was screaming and scooting away, that my hymen was completely blocking my vagina. There was just a small hole, enough for blood to go through. I had a hymenectomy - yes that's actually a real surgery. I can now use tampons with no problem.

Tampons should not hurt if they are inserted properly and you have no physical abnormalities. Most likely you are inserting them at a bad angle. If you have to switch and not use tampons, there is something other than a pad that can be used. It is called the Diva Cup. See this web site for info:

Try using a junior tampon. And yes it can hurt, if your not using it or inserting it right. You have to make sure that it is in place correctly. Once you have inserted it correctly, you should feel little or no discomfort at all. Just keep trying til u get it right. It took me a few time also, but you'll get it!

I'm a nurse and yes this could be the reason. I think you should find the smallest ones you can find and use them, see if that helps. Wear them when you are bleeding the heaviest then wear like a liner or something. I hope this information helps you. Take care and never feel bad about asking for information. Take care and all the best.

it could hurt if you're not bleeding much, because there may not be enough lubrication for the tampon to slide in nicely like it's supposed to. so if your flow is really light, it might hurt.

also, if it's your first time and you're nervous, you could be tensing up without realising it making it hard to go in.

it could be the position you're in. personally i find it hard to put in a tampon while sitting down, i have to be standing and slightly bent over.

if you're a virgin you might want to try a thinner tampon if you're using a thick one, espescially if you're not used to anything being up there. hope this helps!
