Congrats, and welcome to womanhood!

Yes, it can last for one day. A longer period might occur at any time, or you may have to wait until next month... or a few months from now. I had my first at 11 and then didn't get another one for 4 months, after I'd turned 12, so there's really no predicting "when" accurately. As for length, initially they may only be a day or two long, or your next one could be heavy, with red blood, and last a full 7 days.

Make sure you have maxi pads in the house, and carry one around with you (probably in your purse or some other discrete place) just in case. You'll feel it coming (cramping in your lower stomach or back is usually a key indicator), so you should have some time to find a bathroom and prepare yourself before you risk messing up your clothes.

A girl´s first period can vary from one girl to another, it can last from three to six days but there is no exact rule for that. Your next periods may not exactly be "on time" once a month, your body needs some time of its own to get all those new hormones organized. You shouldn´t worry about it but you should find somebody to talk about it. Try leaving a message for your mom to read when she comes from work at night so she can find the time for a conversation. Or you can try your dad if it´s not too embarrassing (I have a divorced friend who is now a single dad of three girls and is doing a pretty good job). Maybe your dad IS prepared for this conversation. Good luck!

Yes your first period could only last one day and it could also be light brown. I know someone whose first ones were light brown but lasted like a week. There are books on the subject. Lots of them in fact. If you are uncomfortable asking your dad (which is perfectly understandable) wait until your mom comes home from work. Or ask her in the morning on the way to school. A teacher and an aunt are good people to ask also.

I Really Hope That This Helps You!
Good Luck!

Hi selena, well, lets start off with my telling you that I am past the stage of periods, but iI can try to help you as best as I can.Yes,a period can start off in this manner.I know that when I was a young lady I started off in this way where one day I would get my friend (as we used to call it) then it would go away and three days later it would return. You see, when you start to become a woman your periods are very irratic and this can drive a young girl crazy, you never know when you ll get it.if youre prone to getting cramps, then thats one sure sign that youre getting your period.mine used to last for 5 days thats five days of agony. I hope Ive given you some good pointers. rubberstampr.
