When planting bamboo of any type be sure to put the appropriate barrier down to prevent it from taking over your yard, Visit your local garden store and ask the clerk what you need. It is a big commitment, and if you don't contain it, it will be a nightmare.

Bambusa oldhamii: This is the one to plant if you want BIG canes. Gets up to 4 inch diameter canes, and 40 feet tall or more. Highly valued for its imposing but graceful presence.
Bambusa vittata: Tropical and subtropical clumping bamboo, usually giant, growing to 50 feet with numerous branches at a node, one or two much larger than the rest. The canes are striped with green.
All bamboo is sensitive to cold and should be planted in a protected area. Also be aware that it is highly invasive which means it can take over several feet of your yard a year, sneak under a 4 foot section of sidewalk to the other side and will grab your first born when it thinks you're not watching. You can either pot it in a huge pot before planting or use a root barrier at least 2 feet deep to keep it from getting away from you.

All this scary stuff aside, bamboo is absolutely beautiful. It grows lush and green, it's drought tolerant and makes a great privacy screen. If you don't want it to grow to 40 or 50 feet tall, you can top it and it will only make it more lush. If you do decide to plant it, I know you'll love it's appearance and low-maintenance life style.

It depends on where you live I would suppose, but I do know that if you plant bamboo down south you can plan on being very busy trying to control it. The stuff will spread everywhere.

Bamboo is like a weed. It takes over and chokes out everything else.
