To boot pc in safe mode, reboot the pc, then repeatedly press F8 until a menu pops up. Then select Safe Mode. The screen should look inflated. Everything is a different resolution. This isnt a problem it is supposed to be this way. But why do you need safe mode to run a scan? If there is a dangerous program on you computer look for it here:

Go to my computer,
open the C; drive (make sure to click the link on teh left that says show contents of this folder)
Open the program files folder there.
Delete the dangerous program of scan it with an antivirus to make sure that it is indeed the problem.

Delete Temp
Delete Prefetch
Delete Cookies
to make sure there are no data miners or anything.

Hope this helps!
