If I buy an new unlocked Sony Ericsonn phone that is compatible on the same network as my current service provider, will I have to call the company to have them activate it? I love my cell phone plan, but it is a really old AT&T Wireless plan that beat anything out on the market today. Calling the company for anything usually results in being strong armed to change service plans.

Btw, my current phone is also Sony Ericsonn. Thanks in advance for your answer.

You do not have to call anyone at cingular. All you do is switch the sim card from your current phone into the one you are purchasing. To find your sim card, it is usually located underneath the battery. Also make sure that the phone is unlocked (even if it is locked to cingular it will still not work). Another thing is make sure the phone that you buy has the bands 850 Mhz, and 1900 Mhz. Some of the european tri-band phones do not have the 850 mhz band and thus may not work in certain areas of the US.

This is the way to do it. If you want to buy a phone directly from cingular you will be charged a fee of $18 to upgrade.. If you buy an unlocked phone directly from the manufacturer, etc. you will avoid this fee, and you will not be forced to migrate over to cingular orange.

well i think the activation is like 25-35$. all you have to say is, sorry i am happy with my current plan and service. Be assertive and you'll be ok. If you buy a Brand new phone without changing your plan it'll probably cost a few hundred dollars just for the phone... personally I like at&t wireless when it was just that. I think since cingular took over it turned to $hit! I cancelled and switched to sprint.
