I own an HP desktop that is about 5 years old and it works just fine, but i need a computer that is portable. Can anyone recommend a brand that is under $1000 and very reliable? I would mainly be using it for doing research on the internet, downloading music to upload on my ipod and word processing.

Also, what is the best website or store to buy a new computer? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Don't use any of those internet sites, which you run the risk of being fly by night operations and will disappear right after you buy from them, unless you are talking about well-known ones such as Dell or Gateway...

If you have one near where you live, I would recommend checking Best Buy...I have a very good Toshiba laptop from them which I am typing on to you this very moment...It has an 80GB Hard Drive, CD and DVD burner, 512MB of RAM, wireless connectivity, etc...The processor isn't the best for high tech video games at 1.86 GHz...but if you aren't doing that, don't worry about it...and I bought it for about $530...brand new...

I walked into Best Buy and got a $1200 Toshiba laptop on clearance for $850
It has 1.5 gigs of ram and 120 gigs of hard drive. Try Best Buy or Circuit City. Be patient and wait for a deal. The wait is very much worth it! I have a Satellite too. They come with a lot of extras. You can watch movies and listen to music without booting up the whole computer!
