Good luck with that. I've tried (not too long ago, in fact), and your self-esteem is the long-term victim. It's no problem if you don't mind living life as a doormat until you don't even respect yourself anymore. Or you could try justifying your eventual self-contempt by turning to booze and drugs, so you'll deserve it at least.

You have to set boundaries if you want to be able to live with yourself, however. And BOTH partners in a relationship deserve respect. Get disrespected enough, and that'll turn to resentment, and resentment will kill intimacy, and then you'll need a drink or something just to perform in the bedroom.

I guess I should ask how bad it is, and what does she do that is so controlling to be fair here. But if almost everything little thing has to be her way, and if you cannot reach reasonable compromises where your needs (e.g. respect for your differences) are met, then all the soothing words she can summon up when she's feeling romantic will ring hollow one day.

You would handle a controlling woman the same way you would handle a controlling man. You do not let yourself be controlled. You refuse to allow anyone to control you. You leave any person who continually tries to control you, after you have first had a discussion about it and, if you are married, you go to counseling. If you can't stop the controlling behavior, you remove yourself from the relationship. If it's your mother who is controlling you, as opposed to a girlfriend or wife, you tell her that you love her and that you are a man now. You tell her you need to live your own life. If she wants to be a part of it, she needs to respect your wishes to control your own life. Period.

It's almost impossible to handle. Controlling issues derive from all sorts of past situations like low self-esteem, past spousal abuse, parental example, etc...

If you are fortunate to identify "why" she is controlling then you might have a shot at changing her perspectives.

Good luck!

The same way you'd handle a rabbid dog. Except you can't turn your back on a controlling woman like you could a rabbid dog. LOL

Let them think they are in control. Or get a tape recorder and record her and play it back for her and let her hear herself. This sometimes comes as a shock to people that don't see how they are.

You answer yes dear and no dear and give us what we want and tell us what we want to hear. If you have a difference of opinion, keep it to yourself.
