I'm a student in the market for a laptop, however when I ask around Campus I get a variety of responses. My observations are that the most common ones around campus are Dell, Toshiba, IBM, HP and Acer. I'm kinda preferential to Dell but they can be quite expensive when I request the features I want. If anyone has really good experience with a particular brand of laptop for at most 4 years can you please help me?!!

Thanks for all the responses. Mac's have been suggested to me but I'm partial to Windows PCs since a wider variety of programs run on them. I'm kinda leaning towards Dell since I was really satisfied by their service, but HP has the same stuff I would like on a laptop for a lot less cheaper than Dell. I do want a laptop for student needs but since it may be my first major computer purchase in 8 years I'm also looking for a desktop replacement. Any thoughts?

I would recommend the dell e1505. Small, light and powerful for student related needs. I have 2 dell laptops and would get another if I needed one. 1 I have has lasted for 6 years. Here are the coupons and deals for Dell: http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html

Good Luck.

I had a Dell and I wasn't impressed with it. I think you can get the best deals with a Toshiba, but I personally am partial to HP. I love my laptop and it suits me perfectly. I got it at a great price, too! I've also heard that Sony is good. The reality is, most of the major brands these days offer the same thing and aren't all that different. I think you should check out some review sites (or go online to your public library's magazine database and check out Consumer Reports) and then just wait for a really good sale. Be sure to get a Sunday paper or check online for the Best Buy, Circuit City and Comp USA ads. Good luck!

I recommend a Dell but remember allot of the extra features you think you need you probably don’t. I recommend that you go for more ram as opposed to processor speed. I have had two dells over the years and neither has given me any problems.

Toshiba is great. Also, I see most people use Dell Notebooks so they must be good.

I would get a mac. They can meet ALL your needs/wants. Even as far as features. Its not bad to be different. don't worry about what everyone else at your school has. I didn't, and now I get compliments from everyone at my school. They love my mac. Check it out for yourself.

Whatever you do... don't buy Gateway! I've had to send mine back numerous times because of overheating and the battery not charging. They keep it for 6 weeks at a time... not good when you need it for school!
