Once again it depends on the type of fish. Usually though it's just another male of the same species that's in the tank. Usually they don't have to be bought together.

Fish don't get married as far as I know. If you have a pair that are protecting eggs or fry then that is because it's a species that pair up like Angels do! If you put a male guppy in the tank with several females the male will mate with them all and take no interest in the fry unless he's hungry. Different fish species like different mammals all have there own way of doing things!
To be a successful breeder you need a seperate tank and the knowledge to prepare it for each species! You also need to know which eat the eggs and which protect them!

The answer is fish aren't people they are fish. No husband, and no wife just fish. Fish vary greatly depending on type. With betta the male cares for the eggs, and the female will happily eat her eggs. (Of course the defends his nest and will in some cases kill her.) Other fish the male is done after mating. In general once the eggs hatch the parent will eat the baby fish.

They aren't really husbands. Fathers, but not husbands. Some fish do pair off and tend to stay together, but most fish will just mate with the most alpha male of the same species in the tank.
