yes they did there where many vehicles that where equipped whit the gas generator mostly trucks where the generator took his place on the load bed or on private cars . The intention was to save full for use on the front line. They even did equip some old light panzer's mark I and II with wood generators for use in driving schools.

Yes . This was quite common in Europe due to a shortage of petrol. The generators were towed behind the vehicle.

A kind of tank was installed on cars (in Ireland I know of) where water was run through charcoal producing a gas that could power and automobile internal combustion engine. Not very fast but they did run.
