I am obsessed with chess, but have no one to play it with and no program. I want to know the best free downloadable chess program. I would prefer if it isn't a time trial and as little restriction as possible. I have Windows XP.

Rather than playing against a computer, why not go to a free online server where there are a lot of people to play against. Yahoo, for example, has free chess available. I also recommend freechess.org. You'll have to download a graphical interface for it, but it's well worth it.

If you're still wanting to play a computer for free, try this: http://www.freechessarea.com/memberarea/winboard-4_2_7a.exe
