My parents are SERIOUSLY pressuring/forcing me to go to a nice college nearby so that I can drive home,....everyday!!!!!
1) I would really appreciate feedback from someone who has either been in this situation or does this everday.
2) What can I do, I understand that it would make my life easier because my food and laundry would be taken care of if I lived w/ them, but what about my sense of self-respect, I have always assumed and therefore imagined college as my chance to be indepedent.

Parents know the bird must leave the nest sometimes and it is hard for them to know now is the time.

I would put together a list of pros and cons of going near home or going away. After you make the list give each item a weight of how important it is.

I think you will find cost will be a big factor. Your education is too important to get sidetracked by running out of money or getting in to serious dept at your age.

However, after reviewing the list, if you still feel like you must go, sit down with your parents and have an adult conversion of your pros and cons list and your need for independence.

I do that I go to college that is 20 mins away from home and it is better for some but then others might feel more better moving out. You can still be independent living with your parents, theres nothing wrong with it at all. If you want to have your own place and all then go for it or you could try a semester of college and drive home everyday and see how you like it and if not get your self a place.

Your parents are wrong to do this. I highly recommend that you live at the school, not at home and for the reasons you already mention. I will actually force my kids to do this when the time comes. As far as what you can do is concerned, this ultimately is going to boil down to who has the power. First of all, I would try to explain to them that this is what you want and there is no compromise. If they are holding all the cards (i.e. all the money) then you might have little choice in the end but to threaten to move out and skip college (or worse yet, to join the army). This may horrify them into letting you have your way, but you would have to prepared to follow through. If you are prepared to do that, then you have the power. Otherwise, they have it. Good luck.

May I suggest you do the math?
If you were independent, you would have to pay rent, food, laundry, medicine, cleaning supplies, gas, oil, tires, clothing, and work a job at the same time
Dear Heart, it appears you have the best of both worlds!
College is your chance to be independent. Independent of all the responsibilities that goes with making it on your own, so that you can apply your energy to your studies.
Think about it,and thank your parents for wanting to support you in school.

i understand completely. my parents wanted me to go to school very close, but i didn't, because i wanted to go somewhere completely different from where i am. i wanted a change. but i ended up going to school nearby because they convinced me it would be a lot cheaper (it is), and financing was a HUGE issue for our family. however, i'm planning to transfer to an out of state school once i financially get myself together a little more, so i can see more, and finally be independent of my family.
