When your eyes are closed, you are less anxious and you are thinking about the past image enough to see it again.
The distractions of the lights and images of the room won't interfere.

Like everyone has said it's hard to concentrate when you are looking at something, especially if it is entertaining. But for me, when I'm being counseled or am sharing personal thoughts, I cannot look at the person without crying. I think when I look into people's eyes I can see their emotions, and that makes me nervous. But that's just me.

I think it's probably the 1st part, but I'm sure the second thing happens to atleast one other person in the world.

It helps to visualize the event. With their eyes closed, they can block out the stimuli in their current environment and focus on the stimuli in the recalled event.

Yes, it gets rid of distractions. What if you were trying to remember something but there was a picture of a really good looking person. Or there were fireworks and explosions. It would be hard to focus on remembering.

it just helps the therapists relax better and concentrate better on you and your being. and then help them in concocting better stories!
