i am trying to find out how to stablize it, so i can repair the foundation of the old house that sits over it. located in the california gold country near oroville.

Wow. Interesting. An open mine shaft? There's no way to fill it. An enginered solution is probably needed. I'd think it would consist of some sort of a plug, with a drain to the outside of your foundation to prevent pressure buidup in the shaft below the plug. I don't see any way for it to be a DIY project. I'd love to meet you at the Depot for lunch sometime and talk about how it turns out! (Best prime rib sandwich in Butte County!) I live in Browns Valley.

I get this question all of the time....well maybe not all of the time. Let's see..can you fill it with concrete? Perhaps bracing the walls with heavy timbers, but I don't know how you would get them into the basement. I suggest you find a mining engineer. Any out there want to put in their two cents?
