It's a possibility, I suppose. However, you said "could have", not "did". The short answer is "no", but via a rough false palette in the back of the mouth to prevent overflow of fire into the bowels, an oil gland in the throat, and the ability to spew the oil at ungodly speeds by flinging the neck forward like a striking snake and contracting the gland, igniting the gaseous stream on the teeth, yes, it might have been possible. Probable, not in a million years, but yes, it might have been the least bit possible.

Actually, while there is no scientific evidance of a fire breathing dragon ever having exsisted, there is biological evidance that they could exsist.

There was a very interesting documentary on the discovery channel about mythological creatures and if they could exsist in nature. Dragons were one of the creatures they examined and concluded that it would be possible for them to exsist. There are several types of animals and insects that can squirt or make red hot liquids. Since there are examples in nature of creatures able to do something similar to breathing fire, they were able to throw around some current science to dream up some 'real life' dragons.

Knowing what we know about types of flying dinosaurs, it isn't too far fetched to think that there could have been a dragon. I'll supply the link to the discovery site about the show in the sources.

Enjoy!

Dragons are a really interesting subject since they have popped up in many different ancient civilizations all over the world. Some people have taken that fact to mean that dragons really existed since they show up in so many pictures all over the world. The real reason I believe that so many civilizations had dragons in their lore stems from dinosaurs. Dinosaurs lived all over the globe and when they died they left their bones behind. All it would take would be someone finding some dinosaur bones and using some imagination to come up with a dragon.
