My computer recently crashed while using my main internal CD ROM which is also a DVD and CD writer. It must be a hardware problem now because even after a factory fresh restore it won't recognize a CD in the drive. It is not a power problem. It receives the CD and ejects when I push the button again. The drive indicator light comes on for a few seconds, and goes off. It shows the drive letter, but it will not recognize a CD. It works fine with my second CD ROM drive on the PC tower, and also on my external CD ROM. It might be something simple, but I don't know how to fix it. Maybe the drive is no good now. I have a HP PC, and Windows XP. Please help.

If you haven't already, try this:

-Go to "My Computer"
-Right click on your hard drive and go to "Properties"
-Then on the tabs above, click "Hardware"
-Click "Troubleshoot"

There are a sequence of questions it asks you and from there, good luck. Hope this helps.

And as always, you could find more info using a search engine such as Google.

Hi

First thing to do is as Dragon said,
> right click on My Computer
> Properties

> Hardware
> Device Manager
find your cd/dvd roms listed and expand so as to see if your computer even recognizes it. If it's listed then it's possible it's the hardware itself.

Then go to control panel, add and remove hardware, and re-install the drivers for said "rom", either with the factory cd or from windows.

Maybe you tried all that already.
Good luck

The hardware it self is Plug and Play, it advise that it would not favor any drivers. try starting off the case, and unplug the serial cable from the CD ROM, turn on the computer without the serial cable, turn it off and plug the serial cable to the hardware, turn on the computer. reliable success.
