I do that occasionally... I have to reming my husband as to why!... When you have so many things to do with so many thoughts in your mind already and friands, family, whoever are wanting you for something, your mind can become so full and you get to where you don't know which way is up or down. Without distractions, a person can slow thier thought process down and put thier priorities together so that that "overwhelmed" feeling will subside... If this happens a lot then it could be caused from ADD. Racing thoughts as if someone has a remote control over your mind... it really depends unless of course the fresh air part as an excuse could mean someone or something doesn't smell right! j/k...The air part is just thrown in for the clearing of the head part. It is the excuse to get outside and away from anything or anybody to "re-focus" our thoughts,

It's more about going outside to be alone with one's thoughts and in a different environment than about the fresh air itself. That said, excersise and fresh air are very good for stimulating blood flow which sends more oxygen to the brain, which therefore means it functions on a better level. Depending on a person, it can be a combination of both these things.

It is rarely the air, although some people are especially sensitive to stale air. It is the change. The change of room, the change of position, the escape from the eyes of the other person. It really does help to change something when thinking through a problem.
People also tend to start to breathe more shallowly when they are worried or upset, going outside for air, they tend to take a few deep breaths. This, of course, floods the brain with oxygen and helps the thinker to think more effectively.

It's not so much the fresh air as the few minutes alone to come to terms with something, or calm down, or have a quiet cry or laugh to yourself, without having to explain to those around you. It's a few minutes of privacy, though not everyone realises that and follows sometimes. Very frustrating!

Your brain actually does need oxygen in order to function properly. If the air is "fresh", you are literally able to think better. So, you see, it's more than just a saying.
