We don't listen to Christian music, and I am not sure I like even the kid versions of recent pop songs. Any other suggestions?

Don't give up on the Christian music. My eight year old listens to it all the time on his MP3. Here are some good songs. You might find you like them yourself.

Artist(songs)
Hard rock:
Hawk Neslon(The One Thing I Have Left, Bring Em Out)
Broken Yoke(Vapor, Caught in the moment)
Kutless(Strongtower, Hearts of the Innocent)

Rock
Newsboys(Who, Joy, Thrive, Breakfast, Live in Stereo, It is you, He Reigns, Wherever we go, I am Free)
Audio Adrenaline(Hands and Feet and Big House)
Third Day(You are mine)
Casting Crowns(Voice of Truth, Lifesong, Does Anybody Hear Her, Praise You In This Storm)
Building 429(The Space between Us)
Matthew West(Happy, I can’t hear you, Out of my hands)
Downhere(A better way)
RelientK(Two lefts don’t make a right album – forward motion, getting into you, mood rings)

Pop/Praise
Chris Tomlin(How great is our god, Indescribable, Made To Worship)
MercyMe(Here With Me, Homesick, Shine on, So long self)
Superchic[k] – (Stand in the Rain)
Matt Redman – (You Never Let Go)
Aaron Shust – (My Savior My God)
Jeremy Riddle (Sweetly Broken)

I've included some ideas via link below... and here are some more suggestions. The "oldies" (or classic rock) are just great. Introduce your child to The Beatles, The Supremes, Jackson Five, and so on. Take him/her to some classical concerts. Most symphonies have concerts for kids to introduce children to classical music. Often they take cartoon themes and such and perform them as a symphony. But some of the classic symphonies are also timeless. Find a performance of Overture of 1812. Your child will remember the cannons forever. Last, there is an awful lot of Christian music out there that sounds just like any other pop or rock music - without the bad themes. I would definitely reconsider that genre. In fact, find a Chris Rice CD with The Cartoon Song on it. My nieces are 13 and 14 and they still love this song. Your 7 year old will LOVE it. Oh yeah, and High School Musical is GREAT for your child too. If you have not seen the movie (is that even possible) you should get it for your child and watch it together. It is Grease for 2006. dtrack!!!

Fred Penner. I loved his music when I was a kid, and I still love it. My friends and I used to listen to it at university, so even though they are children's songs, they are classics. Disney movie songs are always a safe bet. Try getting your child interested in classical music too. The best way to do this is to try taking your child to a short concert to develop some interest. You might also try enrolling your child in music lessons like guitar, piano, violin, or voice if he or she seems interested, since seven is a good age to start.

Try High School the Musical - also Wal Mart sanitizes lyrics on the cd's they sell or warn you that they haven't. Also check out the kid bop series. The students at the elementary where I work LOVE High School the Musical - ALL ages

Disney channel has a lot of cool songs, and the lyrics aren't bad.
European music is great too. European music doesn't have many bad language so you will be set on that.
Also, Hanana Montana or Hilary Duff.

My kids listen to Kids Bop and a lot of classical and soft jazz. They also listen to my old stuff from high school.
Buy cds from their favorite cartoon shows or movies.
Good luck Hon!

You don't listen to Christian music. Wow that is surprising because Christian music is awesome. There isn't much to choose from in Secular music. I would recommend Kelly Clarkson, U2, and Carrie Underwood since you don't listen to Christian music.
