More than likely the probllem is a dirty pilot burner If the flame on your pilot is not burning clean means it is not heating the thermocouple properly. the thermocouple produces an electrical current when heated measured in millivolts. (less than one volt) This current is enough to operate your thermostat & gas valve on your heater. If the pilot flame is dirty it will not produce enough heat to the thermocouple hence not producing enough current.to operate the unit. If this is indeed the problem it should be done by a certified tech to ensure that it is cleaned properly &that there's is no gas leak after. Of course like some others have said it could also be a faulty thermocouple or thermostat.

If you have an old-fashioned two-wire thermostat, which is likely in a floor furnace installation, I doubt it is the thermostat. You can prove that by removing the cover. if you see a littl vial insode with Mercury in it, there should be two wires connected to screws in there. Using something electrically conductive (paper clip, etc.) short the two terminals together. if the furnace comes on, get a new thermostat.
But, the most likely cause is a bad thermocouple. It is a relatively inexpensive thing to replace, but unfortunately, someone needs to go under the house to do the work. If you can't do that, and don't have a resource to call on, it's time to call the heating repar guy.

many two wire thermostats are 110 volt especially hydronic U CAN BE SHOCKED OR KILLED IF U USE A PAPER CLIP .turn off power and with a small piece of wire jump the two over then turn on power .if it works then u have a bad thermostate

If the pilot is lit and it doesn't start it very well could be the stat. Try jumping out R and W, it should start.
