I supervise a team of 6 people and since I came on board a year ago one of my team members refuses to take instructions from me. She has written me two emails saying she will not take any instructions from me or attend meetings if one of my superiors is not there. All her mail and incidents have been reported to HR but nothing has been said to her. My immediate superior said I should let HR handle it. I want to ask them what they are doing about her because I have had it and other team members feel she is not carrying a fair load. What are we paying this woman $70,000 a year for?

you need to keep the emails she has sent you. The next time she does this, write her up or whatever is the first step in your company's disciplinary process. You need to set a meeting with the director of your HR dept and explain thigs to that person. The individual needs to be fired and the sooner the better. She will undermine your authority with the rest of your team. If HR will not listen, then you need to set a meeting with whomever is over HR. Point out how she is affecting your group from a financial point of view. Senior execs think of everything in terms of numbers, so present a numbers case to them.

Document in written format each and every incident and turn it into HR weekly. You need to establish a list that is verifiable. They can't ignore it that long, and if they do go to the VP/Head of HR personally and let them know. Then when she gets canned call me - I'll do anything you want for $70K!

If they will not let you fire her, ask them to find a place for her in another department. Maybe it is just you she hates, but I doubt it. If she is really just a lazy spiteful witch, I'm sure the other department head will soon be complaining to HR also. BTW, even the HR mgr has a boss - complain to that person (politely, but firmly).

In my general experience, HR people are the people too dumb to get an actual job...like public school teachers.
