The mission of the united states armed services is to protect America from threats...foreign and domestic. When Saigon fell to the North, American lives weren't any less free. When Iraq falls, America isn't going to magically be less free.
America was less free because the government kept tabs on student "subversives" (thanks to the FBI) in the 70's and then seized unprecedent executive power...ESPECIALLY in this administration. Iraq never took away my freedoms at home. George Bush's secret prisons, suspension of habeus corpus, data mining (asking Google, libraries, phone companies, etc to turn over information on patrons) and warrantless wiretapping with no oversight threatens my freedoms though.

For a guy who calls himself "powerful", how is it that you complain about getting your rights taken from you? If your ideas are so "powerful", how is it that they don't rule the day? For a guy with such "powerful" ideas, why don't your ideas command the political climate, so that none of your rights are taken away?
By the way...which freedom is being taken away? Specifically...which right has been taken from YOU?
and...why does such a "powerful" guy like you only get a 5 percent best answer rating?

Please list for me the names of all the Americans who have been falsely arrested under the Patriot Act. It will be a pretty short list. The people being held in Secret Prisons are enemy combatants. These people are not even protected by the Geniva Convention. According to the Geneiva Convention, America would be within its rights to execute every one of them without trial. The were caught in civilian attire, hiding among civilians and attacking our troops.
This is a red herring. The president has shown great restraint in dealing with these monsters. Any American troops found abusing them have been arrested, court-martialed and convicted.
Even if you consider the enemy combatants to be POW's they can still be held without trial, until hostilities cease. None of these prisoners have been in our custody as long a John McCain was a POW of North Vietnam for crying out loud.
Habeus Corpus does not apply to POW's or enemy combatants. As far as the 1970's go, I don't know how old you are but I remember those years. Contrary to what you might have been told, there were some really bad people out there, like the Weathermen, that were really trying to violently overtthrow the Goverment. Let me remind you, the Constitution is not a suicide pact. If any Commander-in-Chief needs to take extreme action to prevent the destruction of the U.S. and her institutions then he/she must do it. During the Civil War Lincoln suspended Habeus Corpus and even had congressmen arrested for subverting the war effort.

In order to ultimately make our country free these things need to be done. Part of our freedom is to be able to go out into the world and not have to worry about safety, too. George Bush took on an ugly and unpopular way of protecting Americans. Some day you will thank him.

You raise some very good points in your question. bush is already known as a worthless puppet. You need to focus on those people who truly call the shots. Democracy and the two party system is a scam designed to give people the illusion of freedom. Look beyond bush and cheney and the other cronies. Their pay masters serve a greater twisted evil, working against the masses.

Which freedoms, exactly, are being taken away from you by these?
This "whetever happens to them is fine by me as long as I can still order my latte with soymilk" attitude is what makes human rights catastrophes possible.

Telling the american people and their fighting men that they're 'fighting for our freedom' is just a way to manipulate the weak-minded into supporting the war, and to give the soldiers the false belief that they're dying for something worthwhile.
