Terry Pratchett's "Diskworld" series. There are over 30 books, and the characters develop as the series progresses.

These fall more under "fantasy" than sci-fi, since they involve mostly magic. (Although, in later books, sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology.) Most of the action is humorous, with occasional serious/philosophical bits.

Each book stands pretty much by itself ... you don't necessarily have to read them in order, although it helps you understand the characters better.

"It is said that whomsoever the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad. In fact, whomsoever the gods wish to destroy, they first hand the equivalent of a stick with a fizzing fuse and Acme Dynamite Company written on the side. It's more interesting, and doesn't take so long."
(from "Soul Music")

Ender's game is DEFINITELY my all-time favorite sci-fi book EVER. It's about [the future] Earth is going to be attacked by these aliens and there's a space academy thing for kids to learn how to kill them. But it's just awesome. And it's a series, really, and has a couple sequels. I highly recommend it, if you like sci-fi you'll love Ender's Game.

The Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton.

A delightful broth of murder mystery and romance all boiled together in a world where vampires, werewolves, and everything "sci-fi" live in abundance, these books could just become your guilty pleasure.
