I have read most of the answers listed but my problem is that both my master and slave show up in the Bios but not in my computer. The master shows up but not the slave. The slave operating system was damaged and will not boot as a master. Operating system is windows 98. I have a new computer now with XP but I still have my old 98 computer and am using it to try to salvage the files off the damaged hard-drive. All the jumpers are set and the slave is in the center connector and the master in the first. Any help will definitely be appreciated. I am sure, at least most likely, that the boot sector is damaged on the slave drive.

Xp will read FAT32 partitions, with or without a boot sector present.

If you are placing the slave drive on the same IDE cable, you BIOS should detect the drive.

Look at the jumper in the Masterr now move the jumper on the slave all the way away from the position of the maste go all the way to the end and open the BIOS you will see both the slave and the master then save and exit.

Have you tried the slave drive in your new computer? Plug it in as slave and see if the XP machine will read it.

Isn't the master supposed to be on the center connector?

Either way, can't hurt to try reversing the cable connections.

if the boot sector is damaged, you may not be able to see the drive. If there is sensitive information on it, you may need to use recovery software to get the data. Try going to www.komando.com and search for data recovery and see if you find any software that may help...
Sorry and good luck!
