Metals are usually shiny, hard, malleable and ductile, and are good conductors of heat and electricity. Nonmetals are usually dull brittle, non-malleable and non-ductile, and are not good conductors of heat and electricity. Nonmetals are usually gases at room temperature. Metals and nonmetals form ionic bonds while two nonmetals form covalent bonds.
