People who are proofreading my papers are saying that I need two spaces after periods. I don't think that because I was never tought that. I need to get my story straight.

You would be amazed at the amount of discussion and argument that goes on about this issue. I prefer single spacing but in the end, unless you are writing to a set style, it's up to you.

Use one space after all punctuation, including periods, question marks, exclamation points, and colons. Putting two spaces after these marks of punctuation is a convention that evolved because typewriters were equipped only with monospaced fonts, which made it difficult to see where sentences ended. Professional typographers have always used only one space because they use proportionally spaced fonts, which do not require the extra spaces in order for a series of sentences to be readable. Because most of the fonts in today's word processing software programs are proportional, in other words, we do not need to put an additional space after end punctuation or colons when we use our computers to compose.

Traditionally, 2 spaces are required after a period. Some people prefer only one, but I'll tell you as a teacher who has had to read many essays and assignments, having a small break between the sentences makes it much easier for the eyes and brain to follow and stop at the end of a sentence. Sometimes if you are tired, the sentences just seem to run-on. So the spaces give a visual break.

Yes. Always 2 spaces after the finish of a sentence. Don't know why, this is just the way I was taught in typing class.

No, no, no!
It is definitely only one space when typing on a computer.

(Yes, it used to be two spaces on a typewriter, but because computers have wrap-around text, having two spaces could mean all the difference when the computer starts a new line. Trust me - it's ONE SPACE.)
