It is extremely important. But Wall Street is no longer a street where anything happens. In the 1790's a group of stock brokers met on Wall Street in the shade of a buttonwood tree to trade stocks. That meeting was the beginning of the New York Stock
Exchange. Today, the NYSE is housed in a massive building.

The name of the street derives from the fact that during the 17th century, it formed the northern boundary of the New Amsterdam settlement.

In the late 18th century, there was a buttonwood tree at the foot of Wall Street under which traders and speculators would gather to trade informally. In 1792, the traders formalized their association with the Buttonwood Agreement. This was the origin of the New York Stock Exchange.

The New York Stock Exchange is by far the largest stock exchange in the world by market capitalization of listed companies.

Wall Street, more than anything, represents financial and economic power. To Americans, Wall Street can sometimes represent elitism and power politics and cut-throat capitalism, but it also stirs feelings of pride about the market economy.

Since the founding of the Federal Reserve banking system, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in the Financial District has been the point where monetary policy in the United States is implemented (although it's decided in Washington, D.C. by the Federal Reserve Bank's Board of Governors).

A good source for the history is http://www.loc.gov/rr/business/hottopic/stock_market.html
The ability to trade stock for investors makes them more willing to invest because they can redeem their investments when they have another use for the money.
The trading of stock is important to the US economy, but the rival exchange NASDAQ trades electronically and most of the stock trades on wall street are sent to the floor by electronic means. So "wall street " is no longer necessary, and will probably convert to electronic trading also.
