Sadly in this day and age, keeping children in check in public is difficult and tricky. One wrong use of tone in voice or one swat on the butt could result in child abuse charges. So... who would I discipline? How about skipping the parent and the child and going straight for our government for trying to regulate how a child should be disciplined in the first place.

I agree that I'd like to give the parent some insight but I think a lot of parents just have no clue how to raise children. I think there should be mandatory parenting classes for anyone that has children so they know what to do. I do hate to see parents screaming at their children though. It's sad, but parenting classes would definitely make my job as a teacher much much easier.

I wouldn't discipline either. I would just walk behind the parent and start talking out loud holding a cell phone to my ear about the kid. Sooner or later the parent will be so embarrassed they will do something or say something to you . If they say something just state you were not talking about their spoiled brat of a child but someone else brat.

99% of the time it IS the parent's fault. Who is in charge of the child's behavior, manners, values, etc? The child or the parent? :-)

A lot of folks want to have children but then lack the skills and/or don't really want to be ~parents~.

Both of them. The child for acting out and the parent for allowing it.

The parent.

I would advise that the behaviour that they are allowing the child to display is not in the best interests of everyone in the store. I would also advise that I don't care what they do in their own home, or how horribly brought up their child is going to be, as long as it doesn't affect the rest of society.
