I'm guessing "purple rain" is a metaphor for hapiness. He was in a relationship and he wanted everything to be roses and sunshine and happy, but it didn't turn out like that. He just wanted to see her in the "purple rain" -showered in hapiness! :D

Back in the day, Prince was called The Purple One but, i think it's more of a catch phrase than actually meaning anything. It's just a cool sounding hook to the song.

You ask a great questions. I think it is his love, his idea. He used purple as seduction and sexual fantsy. So I took it that it was his vision or dreams. To be in his sexual fantasy or with him sexually.
