Well, my router is in the basement and I receive it upstairs just fine.

Maybe. It depends on everything between the router and the computer in the basement. You shouldn't have a problem going from upstairs to downstairs, but if the basement is underground with cement walls, that could pose a problem.

If it does work at first, position the router's antenna at a 45 degree angle rather than straight up and down. (Wireless signals travelling through a wall/floor at 45 degrees makes the wall/floor seem like it's about 12 feet thick. By angling the antenna, the signal doesn't get this effect.)

You shouldn't have any problems. I just installed a wireless USB card in my friends laptop. She uses it upstairs but the router is way down in her basement. She gets a very strong signal any where in her house.
The wireless routers have a pretty strong signal strength. How far from the upstairs to the basement?
Best of luck and enjoy. :)

Wireless will be as good as you get it.

At a friends house the wireless would not work through one particular brick wall. We think there may have been metal in the wall or something because it worked through other brick walls.

Other things I have heard is anything that can give out interference near the modem (microwaves, monitors, speakers, computers) or in the direct line between the devices. Eg washing machine interefered but only when washing.

Most wireless modems, (I believe Netgear included) have a range of about a few hundred metres.

Be careful that neighbours don't steal your bandwidth.

Depends on equipment, if you rig the average router up you probably have 200 feet or so some claim 300. First you boost your to 10 and get an exander if necessary... good luck...

you will but it will be in a low range.
you should keep the router in the middle of the living room. that way you'll get a better signal all over the house even in the patio, or the front yard
