Somewhere ( I think a school LA textbook) I read that for the Flying ships in the War of the Worlds movie, the models were supposed to ride on a 'pillar of electricity' to hover. However, it said, the 10 000 volts of electricity required were far to whatever to be practical. I never understood if this meant actual levetation, or something about the script mentioning such volts. Does anyone KNOW where I can find that info?
I checked Wikipedia and other top places and they hardly said a word about special effects.

At that time, there was no technology to electrically levitate anything like that. The special effects people might have wanted 10 000 volts to create a luminous column between the ship and the ground in some electrstatic way.

Electrical fields do have an effect on gravity.

We keep hearing about flying vehicles. Fans are getting cheaper, lighter and require less energy. The avionics required to keep folks from flying into each other or into buildings is getting better. But still nothing. I'm with you, I want my flying car.
