Well, obviously we don't think they're boring! I think guys like Sci-Fi because deep down all guys wish we could destroy aliens with a laser gun, have superpowers, or save the world. We basically wish for excitement, and we all think, on some level, that we could do these things under the right circumstances. Listen to Jerry Seinfeld's track on Men and Women from his "I'm Telling You For the Last Time" album. He touches on this.

LOL! Boring Sci-fi shows????
We are engaging more brain cells than anyone watching the View or Oprah ever has. Sci-fi opens up ideas that actually lead to today's machines. Ever hear of the cell phone? In sci-fi ideas can be tested and examined - like how nuclear war is a loose-loose situation. Ever see "Twilight Zone" or "Star Trek" examine social issues, prejudice, mistrust, self image.

Men RULE!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHA.................... just kidding
Honestly, we're watching sci-fi shows - Oh, and sports - don't forget sports!!! - you can rule.

I, a woman, am not an engineer (althought my brother and dad are) but I am a sci-fi junkie. Sci fi explores possibilities beyond the mundane world. It is a game of make-believe with the advanced learning and wisdom of an adult. Some people like soaps, that is adult make believe for the romanitically inclined, but I prefer exploration and adventure over gold-digger smut fantasies.

They don't like the boring ones; they only like the interesting ones! Most sci-fi has a lot of adventure and weapons. Lots of exploring, challenge (like surviving on an unknown planet), risk.

Lots of imagination. When you make up a world, you can mess with the weather, chemistry, species, customs. With SF, you can explore ideas and themes like loyalty, truthfulness, and love, definition of a hero, the various permutations of authority, the role of technology, social norms, etc. How would life be different if we tweaked this?

Not just men. Some women, particularly engineers,
enjoy them as well.

Good science fiction simply expands the possible
environments, problems and tools that a writer has.

Bad science fiction becomes free-for-all fantasy.

In any case, Leonard Nimoy occasionally had to
cover his head so that he couldn't be identified
as he walked around New York, not to hide
from male Trekies, but to hide from all the women
who had fallen in love with his cool logical
persona - they all wanted to turn him into
a red hot lover.

I doubt that he would have had this problem
if they hadn't been watching!

Science Fiction is based on a premise established in the 1800's, that technology will improve and mankind must improve his lot in life or be lost. When you consider the minds, like Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke, Dick, Ellison - I could complete the alphabet here - Survivor, American Idol and The View just don't stand up.

I always wondered why my ex liked shows like The Waltons and Little House on the Prairie. those are far less believable then sci-fi.

Because they're way more interesting than shopping and gossiping.
(Just thought I'd give you some of your stereotyping back)
