The police have been caught in so much I am afraid to go any where near them .

The tax man and the bank have thier hands in my pocket pretty deeply .

This makes me wonder how free really I am -

You're not a slave to the large company that puts weekly or monthly deposits in your checking account. Your real bondage is to your perceived need to buy all the goodies that your paycheck makes possible, such as warm shelter, stylish clothes, and tasty food.

Real freedom exists in the spirit, in knowing that nobody owns what's inside. In the US and other Western democracies, we are lucky that our governments generally don't try to reach their tentacles into that area. That's not to say this freedom isn't under threat, from both the bible-thumping mullahs of the right and the politically correct commissars of the left, but enjoy the fact that it's still a going concern.

As I might say if I were from New Hampshire--live free, then die.

Freedom is relative. You have the freedom to choose the large company you work for, You have the freedom to not be harassed by the police, You could in a socialist country where the tax man is much more greedy than here in the US, in regards to the banks I would certainly shop the market.
don't you feel better already?

You are free to ask that question and even question your country at all. Better yet you are free to have everything you have or not. Quit your job, then you don't have to be a slave to your job or the tax man. Material things are a privilege. Your house, car, candy. The things you have to pay taxes on. Give it all up. Move to Florida, live on the beach and catch fish for dinner. No more problems.

When we say the US is a "free" country it really just means "independent" as in no longer a British colony.

The people are not free. As Americans we do enjoy many liberties, but we are controlled, as you say, by the government, employers, banks, insurance companies all whom regulate our behavior.

I suppose we have a limited role in choosing our leaders that helps guarantee our freedoms.

Freedom is being able to speak freely, worship freely, and have Constitutional protection if I am arrested.

Those three things are lacking in much of the world.

More free than in other countries, but they are slowly wittling away our freedoms. It's mostly because of the liberal feel and do gooders!
