Sounds like the toxic plant "deadly nightshade" or "Atropa Belladonna". Did it just voluntarily appear in your garden? here is a link with a picture to compare your plant to. Nightshade has purple flowers with yellow, centrally located anthers..

They sound to me like garlics. Is the base short green leaf blades with a couple of long sprouts up to the flower? Need more info. By the way, Mexican Heathers aren't fragrant.

It sounds as if you have a Mexican Heather plant. They are wonderful plants which can be used as ground cover, or as stand alone plants. They come back year after year, and multiply. You don't have to do anything for this plant. It will do it all. Enjoy!
