i just bought a router and i was wondering if i need 2 have it on even if im not using them i am afraid i will mess something up if i turn them off

No, you can always turn the router off anytime you want to. But you have to the router on in order to have internet access.

But why would you want to turn the router off? Its meant to always be on!!!

No. You can shut them both off if you so desire, but that's one of the nice things about broadband (DSL) - you can leave it "always on."

If the router is set up correctly, it should establish a connection with the modem after you turn them back on. Turn the modem on first and allow it to get a signal, then turn on the router.

Some modems have a button up front, where you can disconnect yourself from the Internet without turning the units off.

No, you can turn the computer off and unplug the router or else turn off the surge protector.
