I always though it was from the windows that run on Microsoft Windows, but I read other OSs had windowed formats before Microsoft. Why'd they pick that name, then?

its because all of the programs and applications that they run, run in windows...hence the name
look at your screen is your internet browser in a window, or is it your entire os
its a window isnt it

You don't expect Microsoft to change the name in 25 years after Windows 1.0 right?

They named it from the windowing display, that is true, but Windows is the first attempt to bring windowed display to the masses and this name is kinda apt and catchy even though it is not register a trademark like this.

They choose that name, because windows operating system first introduced the GUI(Graphical User Interface) in which window appears for every click. based on that it names the OS as windows.
