I have emotional breakdowns when I see things that deal with childhood, parenting, family, and things of that nature. My dad did leave when I was 9 and my mom and I do have a good relationship. I'm 22 now and I have a good life, I am not that depressed. Some days I am in a great mood while others seem like punishment to be alive. I am a college sr and have goals, so when I get depressed, I just slack off a little bit, but I know in order to graduate, I have to get up out of bed and go to class. I just have these feelings of guilt, regret, slight hopelessness, and total sadness when I come across these subjects. What is this? I am easily bothered and normally melt down once I can get by myself for a few minutes.
What is this? What can I do about it? I don't understand it

You sound like me when I was younger (in my teens and 20's). I finally had a huge meltdown right after my 30th birthday and ended up in a psych ward, where I was diagnosed bi-polar. Have been on medication since (15 years and counting), and it's been a godsend.

I'd suggest you see a doctor before you hit the point I did (where it all comes tumbling down like a house of cards). You'll save yourself a lot of grief and be MUCH happier in the long run.

My best to you!

Well, in my opinion, I would say that you are realizing that you have to plan the next step of your life. Seeing that you are a college senior, you are almost done with this step of your life, and now you need to find what else you must do. I think that you may be thinking of finding someone to share the rest of your life with because you described that you get emotional when you see things that deal with childhood, parenting, and family. So maybe this is a sign that you are anxious about this whole life style change, becuase you have been so used to being able to be on your own and only worry about one person. Have you noticed throughout your life that when a phase of your life has ended, you feel anxious and get the feeling what next? There is a psychological theorist who outlines phases in human life. Erik Erikson. He out lines 8 crises in a humans life, thus come to term the phrase he coined, "mid-life crisis." You may want to check out him and his ideas. Also you may want to set out a 1-year goal plan and a 5-year goal plan. See where you want to be in 1 year and then where you want to be in 5 years. This is easier said than done and actually quite cliche to most people, but if you don't have a goal in life, then your life is purposeless. And if you already have goals, and your life still seems purposeless, perhaps you have set unrealistic goals. Take a look at where you've been and where you want to go. Surround yourself with positive and upbeat people. Try not to be alone alot, because during these times, it can be difficult. We aren't meant to go through life alone anyway.

open your heart and find a lover

it is also okay to feel this way, i bet you're depressed but not admitting it. You want to feel happy and satisfied again.. maybe all this is trying to tell you something.. that you need to let go of the past and move on. Settle down and it's okay to reminisce... once in a while but don't beat yourself down on what happend.

It's called being mentally unstable. Go to the psychology department at your university and see if you can talk to someone about how you're feeling. Good luck to you.

You might be bi-polar. You have to see a psychiatrist to get the proper diagnosis.
