You can add an dinternal drive, an external drive, or a network drive. Basically, once added, they all do the same thing; provide more storage.
An internal drive means you must open the computer and mount and connect the drive within the chassis of the computer. You must know how to set the drive jumpers and BIOS settings to do this. These are often either IDE or SATA, but other types exist as well. This should provide fast access to the data.
Most external drives are connected via USB connection although there are other means. This is the easiest because you're just connecting a USB cable. The data access isn't as fast as with an internal drive, but it's much easier to set up.
A network drive is similar to the external drive except that it connects directly to the network and allows all users of the network to get to it. THere is often management software built in to the device for this.

Oh dont worry, i take a computer repair class, if you change your hard drive, its not like your gonna be dead or something. if you change it, its actaully good. nothing wont happen. but when you change it, you have to play around with the jumpers, and put it on master, or slave. if that wont, then put back your original hard drive back. other wise buy a larger hard drive. the bigger, the better. i use a maxtor hard drive, its passed like 3 years, now i can get a bigger 1 because it can carry a lot of information. thats y my C drive is low, and i always see that icon in the notification area. C drive is to full!!!

If your computer ONLY supports IDE, then you CANNOT add a serial type.
What will happen?
NOTHING!
The plugs will not fit.
And forget about makes of hard drives, they all fit!
Get the biggest capacity you can afford, with the lowest seek time.
The easiest is an external USB type, just plug the cable in and go!

can you please add more detail to your question I don't understand what you are trying to ask?
with most computers you can add a extra IDE or SATA hard drive to your PC with no problem, If you add some "differrent drive" as you have asked and its not configured right then nothing will happen
