One might assume that Buddy Holley had both an interest in and a talent for writing songs, and Elvis did not.

Many singers are singers because they can't write music or lyrics. There are a lot of singers who don't write their own music. That's what keep songwriters employed. There are a lot of songwriters who wrote music a long time before becoming famous as singers.
Then, there are those who write a lot of their own music. Sadly, Buddy Holly didn't live long enough to fully show his talents as a songwriter.

He never had to.His songs were all chosen for him after he signed with The Colonel.
The reason Buddy did was that he was part of a group first plus he had talent.

Because in the very early days of rock n roll most performers didn't write their own songs, they got them from staff writers in the Brill Building or Tin Pan Alley.

Holly , like Chuck Berry, Little Richard,Bo Didley , Neil Sedaka, Carole King, was talented enough to write his own material and he was one of the forerunners of the singer -songwriters who became so popular in the sixties and seventies and even today.
