what u described sounds like what i was told i had(still do). i have had the problem since i was 16. it is called patella femural syndrome. it is very common in girls 16 and up. knee pops, cracks and sometimes grinds together. sometimes it bothers me and hurts. other times i can ignore it and it wont hurt. there are stretches u can do to help. also if it is bad like mine u might have to have surgery, i cant because i cant afford it. BUT to be diagnosed properly, u need to be diagnosed by ur doctor. i hope this helps u and good luck! below is a website to help u better understand what PFS is.

my knee is giving me trouble as well. but in my case I have a torn meniscus. The meniscus is the cartilage in between the bones of the knee. And I too have a pop noise.

I would suspect that most likely you will need to go to a bone and joint specialist and he or she will have you get an MRI.
MRI are painless, so not to worry. Also, you will probably have to go to your Primary Care Physician first before you can just pop into a bone and join specialist, unless you have a PPO plan, otherwise you have to first get a referral from your primary doctor.

You may need fibroblasts and they are actually quite expensive. Talk to you doctor. Fortunately, not all doctors resist input from patients about diagnosis or treatment. If you have an open-minded doctor, who is in control of his or her ego-needs, you probably don't need to diagnose any further and can just say to him or her what's on your mind. Let me emphasize that a bit, since my doctor said my knee prognosis was "totally out of date and idiotic". I have the distinct impression that many people are effectively "stuck" with their knee condidtion .
